Environmental Awareness Activities:

1.  This year TJMS all researched and wrote Environmental Awareness skits in their health classes.  The best skits were put in the final Earth Day Film Festival.  The whole school will be viewing the film festival on April 25th at the start of our school day.  Students will also enjoy popcorn and get an Environmental Awareness Sticker.

2.  Environmental Awareness Sticker:  Students designed and submitted Environmental Awareness ideas for this year's stickers that are passed out to each student during the film festival.  Check back soon to see this year's winning designs and the artists!

3.  After the Earth Day Film Festival, 8th graders will be heading out for a community clean up and 7th graders will be planting trees.

4.  5th and 6th graders will be attending the 2nd Annual Eco Palooza.  This Environmental Awareness Fair is held in the gym and has been coordinated by the Port Washington Environmental Planning Committee along with the TJMS Green team.  The Port EPC helped find and coordinate tons of groups to come present and offer hands on activities for our students.  Special thanks to this group, especially Lisa Rathke, Derek Strohl, and Mayor Tom Mlada for organizing this for our students!

2015 Earth Day Film Festival

Welcome to the 2015 Earth Day Film Festival!  This is the 7th year I have produced the Film Festival.  It has really become an amazing program.  I can't believe how far we have come.  It started as modest little skits 7 years ago and has grown into a huge event that we all look forward too!

This year we (both health teachers) introduced the project 2nd quarter.  We started with some lead-up articles and activities to help students develop prior knowledge and a knowledge base.  We chose several Environmental subjects the students read, researched, and shared in class.  (Scholastic Articles)

Next students did some warm-up activities to get their creative juices flowing.  They selected groups and began the brainstorm process.  Next, they begun the script writing process.  Once their script is written it must be approved by the instructor.  Once approved, they memorize and practice, practice, practice.  They learn new stage skills-like facing the camera, projecting their voices, body language and voice animation.  We tape several takes in front of the camera and a green screen in hopes that each time groups will improve and we will get that amazing take in the end.

Then the selection process begins and I begin editing and compiling the best videos into a final big film.  Every year I am surprised and amazed at the creativity our students demonstrate.  They always come up with new ideas and I'm always excited at the potential possibility of where their skits will take us!

This year the video exceeded an hour---and includes the Nature photography slideshow, as always, these are original photos taken by our students, and I've included a blooper reel.  I already have plans for next year including a new theme, more blooper ideas, and hopefully some trivia or awards!

Without further ado, please enjoy the 2015 Earth Day Film Festival located below!

2015 Earth Day Film Festival--Segment 2--missed this clip--it was supposed to be in the full video!!!!  (One of my favorite segments!)

Earth Day Film Festival 2014

This is the 6th year I have produced the TJMS Earth Day Film Festival.  This festival is a compilation of student created skits on topics related to conservation.  Every year there is a new theme and a new twist.  Students research topics and team up to write a skit promoting conservation in the hopes that we can bring small changes in behaviors to make a big impact collectively.  Once skits are approved, students must memorize lines and act the skit out in class and in front of the camera.  There are many elements to this project and in the end, the very best are selected for the film festival to be shown to the whole school.

On the day of the film festival students enjoy a popcorn snack, a sticker, and a show.

After the film has been watched at school students can then share the film with their families on the district cable station.  This year it will be available on this website.  I may be adding some extras here.  Check out the bonus bloopers reel below!  This year it did not make it into the film festival.  Who doesn't love a good bloopers reel???

Lyndie K. wishes everyone a Happy Earth Day!

Above is a video clip of Lyndie K. when she was little.  Her sister was part of the Eco Club-I believe this was shot in about 2006.  She was tagging along and we got her to wish everyone a Happy Earth Day.  This year her class will be promoted and they will have completed their 4 years here at TJ!  Good luck class of 2018!

Earth Day Film Festival Stickers

This year I asked some of my students to design the stickers.  I'm so glad I did.  We have such talented artists!  This will for certain become a tradition.  I feel like they are works of art!  Our TJMS art teacher, Mrs. Kultgen, took the designs, for some added color, and printed them.  They are beautiful!

The 2 students that designed the stickers are:

8th grade student:  Carrie Park--#Recycle and Heart Design

5th grade student:  Ella Graham--3 R's and Earth Day Banner

Popcorn and a Movie

No movie viewing is complete without a wonderful popcorn snack.  Our special education class has a popcorn business where they sell popcorn on Fridays.  Thanks to the TJMS Jaguar parent group we are able to purchase a bag of popcorn for each homeroom.  Mrs. Shea and her students begin working early the day prior to make enough popcorn for the whole school.  It is then delivered by her students to each homeroom.  It’s a wonderful tradition!
